Greening the Buildings

With the commitment of HKUST to require all new buildings to achieve the performance level of Gold through the HK-BEAM (Building Environmental Assessment Method) process, last year we received the HK-BEAM Gold certification for Lee Shau Kee Business Building & Lo Ka Chung Building/HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study (IAS building).

Green features in these buildings include infra-red operating water taps, dual flush cisterns, using certified well-managed and sustainable sources timber for temporary works during construction, installation of energy meter to continuous monitor energy performance, and avoiding the use of ozone depleting substance products in the building fabric and services. The project team demonstrated that adequate ventilation has been provided to at least 80% of total area of common area in the building through utilization of natural ventilation, and at least 30% of site area is covered by lawn and shrubs.

As our campus will keep expanding with facilities and buildings, we look forward to seeing more creative sustainability elements to be incorporated in the new building designs in coming years.
